Donegal Sea Kayaking Adventure– Wild Atlantic Arches & Irish Island Spirit

This tour is provided as a package exclusively to the Explorers Kayaking Team of Hungary.

Donegal is Ireland at its wildest — a rugged coastal maze of cliffs, sea arches, and emerald islands where the Atlantic’s raw energy meets deep-rooted Irish tradition. Over five full days of sea kayaking, we’ll explore this spectacular coastline, uncovering hidden coves, rock tunnels, and beaches only reachable by paddle.

Our base for the week is the small coastal community of Annagry, from where we’ll launch daily trips at different locations depending on sea and weather conditions. Between paddling days, we’ll visit charming Donegal villages, soak up the Gaeltacht culture, and enjoy authentic Irish evenings — from quiet coastal pubs with live music and dance to shared meals among friends.

To ensure your safety and the attention you deserve, our tours are always small group.

In this case, the ideal group size is 6-8 people, plus two experienced BCUK ASKL certified sea kayak guides.

This is an intermediate to advanced sea kayaking tour. The tour is enjoyable and safe for kayakers who have some sea or whitewater experience, paddle regularly during the season, and are able to paddle 20+ km per day.

A deposit secures your place, full balance due six weeks before departure.

Description

Why Join This Tour

The Atlantic swell and the tiny islands off Donegal create a sea kayaking experience unlike anywhere else in Europe. The interplay of wind, rock, and ocean is both challenging and deeply rewarding — a perfect playground for skilled paddlers.
But it’s not only about the water: paddling with local Irish guides who know every cove, tide, and pub adds a layer of authenticity and joy. This trip is as much about connection — to the sea, to the land, and to the people — as it is about adventure.

Itinerary (these are the options, the plan is finalized daily, depending on the weather)

Day 1 – Arrival in Annagry (Friday, June 27)
Arrival and welcome at our base in Annagry, County Donegal. Meet your guides, check your equipment, and enjoy the first dinner together. Accommodation in Sleepy Hollows Camping, a tranquil woodland campsite perfect for an open-air stay. Evening at leisure with the chance to enjoy a local pub session with live music.

Day 2 – Rosses Archipelago (Saturday, June 28)
We start our adventure exploring the intricate network of islands west of Burtonport — turquoise lagoons, narrow channels, and sandy landings surrounded by Atlantic light. Return to Annagry for dinner and a relaxed evening in the village.

Day 3 – Owey Island & Sea Arches (Sunday, June 29)
Launch near Cruit Island and paddle toward the dramatic cliffs and arches of Owey Island. When conditions allow, we’ll enter echoing sea caves and natural tunnels sculpted by waves. Evening: optional walk near Annagry or a visit to a local pub for music and dance.

Day 4 – Aranmore Island (Monday, June 30)
A short transfer brings us to Burtonport for the crossing to Aranmore Island, Donegal’s largest inhabited island. We’ll explore its cliffs and calm bays, landing for a walk and perhaps a chat with the friendly islanders before returning to base for dinner.

Day 5 – Sightseeing & Culture Day (Tuesday, July 1)
No paddling today — time to explore on land. You can hike nearby trails, visit Glenveagh National Park, stroll the beaches at Carrickfinn, or simply relax at Sleepy Hollows’ wooded haven. In the evening, we’ll visit a nearby village for a classic Irish pub night with live traditional music.

Day 6 – Slieve League Cliffs (Wednesday, July 2)
Weather-permitting, we’ll paddle beneath the mighty Slieve League Cliffs, among the highest sea cliffs in Europe. The immense vertical walls rising from the sea are breathtaking. Return to Annagry for dinner and optional visit to a local pub.

Day 7 – Cruit Island Coastline (Thursday, July 3)
Our final paddle traces the sheltered bays and beaches around Cruit Island. It’s a fitting conclusion — calm waters, playful swells, and the rhythm of the Atlantic all around. Farewell dinner and celebration in Annagry.

Day 8 – Departure (Friday, July 4)
Breakfast, goodbyes, and transfer to Donegal Airport for flights home.

The weather will always dictate what’s possible on the day most especially on west coast of Ireland . There are many more options available to paddle so treat it like a sample itinerary.

The small print:

The tour will go ahead with a minimum of 5 people. Kayak and canoe tours must adjust to nature and to weather conditions. They usually result in a joyful experience but can present some challenges. With the exception of sea tours, we only cancel tours and refund money in the case of dangerous or extreme weather conditions (storms, hail, etc.). In any other case, for example on sea tours, the weather is part of our exploration. If the cancellation period has ended and you do not appear at the agreed meeting place, the tour is considered as having been conducted, and payment is not refunded, nor can it be redirected to another tour.
