Sea Kayaking around the Island of Vis, Croatia (22-26 April 2025)

The furthest from the Croatian coast, deep in the turquoise velvet of the Adriatic, lies the  jewel-like island of Vis

Are you familiar with that special feeling when you are driving south through the tunnels of the Velebit Mountain range and after about the tenth tunnel the scent of the air changes, the horizon opens up, and an amazing thing has happened? You have arrived in the Mediterranean!

Peaking out from the mountain valleys, suddenly we see a wide horizon and finally, there it is, the big wide blue of the Adriatic! As we glide towards Split, the humid air is spiced with the scent of the sea breeze and blooming leanders. Hello Springtime, here we come for an early date!

Things get even better when we see the row of palm trees in Split’s magnificent harbour, the smell of fresh figs, cinnamon tarts or crispy spinach burek, we know it’s gonna be really good… Then we find the ferry and let the joy take over. Let’s go, Vis!

We depart the great ferry port of Split with its armada of majestic, white ferries, we start our journey “away from it all”. Crossing between half a dozen amoeba-shaped islands and decompressing slowly from the journey, we arrive in the welcoming harbor of Vis. This is the feeling of ‘being somewhere else’, near-total disconnection from the noisy world

Vis is a realm of mindful peace, quiet and crystal clear nature. There are no souvenir shops here  selling puffy, white unicorns with sunglasses, or beaches pulsating with beachgoers just passing through. We love places like this: it’s just for the people who want to come here, and they’re here for the same reason we are.

The shores of Vis, and the neighbouring islands, are home to some of the Adriatic’s loveliest small towns and amazing  kayaking terrain. This is where we’re headed.

For your safety and to ensure you get the attention you deserve, our tours are always small group tours.

The maximum number of people on the tour is 10, with 2 experienced, British Canoeing SKL certified leaders.

Description

Summary Info:

Duration: 5 tour days (that’s how many days we tour)

Meals: self-catering tour, local shops, restaurants

Accommodation: family pension in the town of Rukavac costs about 25-30 EUR/night per person (taxes included).

Recommended for: regular sea kayakers, i.e. paddling at sea at least a couple of times a year and otherwise paddling frequently. Having a consistent level of skill and stamina is important for the movement and safety of the group, so please consider this before signing up.

Vis is the furthest Croatian island from the mainland. Its southern side is exposed to the Adriatic swell, so here you can paddle in a Mediteranean climate and an oceanic atmosphere! We choose our terrain depending on the weather, but the chances of a nice swell coming from far away are much higher here than in most of our other Adriatic kayaking terrains.

We have a different itinerary planned for each day, which we change flexibly depending on the mood, strength of the company and the weather. We are on the water for about 6-7 hours every day, taking our minivan to the starting point. We paddle between about 20-25 km per day, with breaks every 90 minutes or so.

From the harbor of Vis we drive to Rukavac, where we move into our gorgeous accommodation on the southern side of the island. Several little islands surround Vis, including Bisevo with its famous bottom-lit Blue Cave and one of our favorite seaside towns: Komiza. The name of the game here is “slowing down”. It’s easy.

We quiet down, we listen and explore. We arrive at a distant place that may just seem closer to us than our neighboring street back home.

That’s how many days on the water: 5 days kayaking

Fine print:

The program will be held with a minimum of 7 participants. Kayak canoe trips are nature-adapted, weather-defying, mostly pure joy, but sometimes a challenge. With the exception of sea tours, tours will only be cancelled and refunded in the event of an accident or extreme weather (storm, hail, etc.). In all other cases, e.g. sea tours, the weather is part of the discovery and we will have to adapt our plans. If the cancellation period has expired and you do not show up for the tour, the tour fee will not be refunded. Detailed cancellation conditions are set out in the GTC.
